My name is Alexandra Jifas, and I am a junior at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
Since I was diagnosed with dyscalculia when I was 10, I remember being lost, and not really having a passion for anything. Everyone was discovering their talents and niche, and I was stuck for 5 years believing I was not special or had no purpose. One of my tutors at the time, caught wind of this and one day, sat with me, with a piece of paper and a pink pen on the table. She told me to write a story about a girl whose dog ran away and eventually found him in the end. She told me to make it as vivid of a story as possible. I ended up finishing in 20 minutes. Once she read the story, she looked at me and said "You have the vocabulary of a 9th grader. Sure, math may not be a strong area for you, but you write so beautifully, and you should embrace that. Not everyone will need math, but everyone will need English, stories, and vocabulary." Since then, I grew fond of poetry, public speaking, and writing short stories. Remembering the kindness of my tutor back then, and specifically the English teachers I had in high school, I was inspired to become an English instructor.
When I am not in school, I enjoy going to concerts (mostly rock and metal) and I freelance write as well. I have almost 3 notebooks from over the past 2 and a half years loaded with poems that I look forward to possibly sharing on this blog in the future. I enjoy reading outside of what is required for school. My favorite genre is any murder mystery or thriller. I thoroughly enjoy Dean Koontz and Stephen King.

Thanks, AJ, for sharing the link to the spotify playlist. Music and writing lyrics can be powerful tools for teaching writing more broadly.
